Optimizing WordPress performance

What this solves

Your WordPress site is slow. This guide covers the main ways to improve speed.

Caching

Use a caching plugin (see “Caching basics”). Enable page cache and consider object cache if you have a lot of traffic or dynamic content.

Images

Compress images (Smush, ShortPixel, or similar). Use appropriate dimensions; don’t upload huge images and scale down in HTML. Consider WebP. Lazy-load images below the fold.

Plugins and theme

Remove unused plugins and use a light theme. Heavy plugins (page builders, sliders) can slow the site; test with a few disabled to see impact.

Hosting and PHP

Use a plan with enough resources. Enable PHP opcode cache (OPcache) if available. Use a recent PHP version (e.g. 8.1 or 8.2) for better performance.

Tip: Measure with GTmetrix or PageSpeed Insights before and after changes.
